About Árni Sveinsson
Gunnlaugur Árni Sveinsson, who competes as Árni Sveinsson, is an amateur golfer from Garðabær, Iceland. He signed with Louisiana State University in 2024 and became the first Icelander to play for the LSU men's golf team, enrolling for the 2024-25 season after a decorated junior career in which he represented Iceland internationally and won multiple junior titles, including events on the Global Junior Golf circuit and back-to-back wins in Portugal in 2024.
At LSU he established himself quickly. In October 2025 he won the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational with rounds of 66, 70 and 67 for a 54-hole total of 13-under-par 203, his first individual college title. He also advanced through stroke-play qualifying into match play at the 2025 U.S. Amateur and was named to the International team for the Arnold Palmer Cup, climbing into the top 15 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Sveinsson qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open on June 9, 2026, during final qualifying — "Golf's Longest Day" — at Lakes Golf and Country Club in Ohio. He posted rounds of 67 and 68 for a 9-under 135 to finish in a four-man tie for the final available places and then won a sudden-death playoff to secure his spot, becoming the first Icelandic man to reach the U.S. Open. He was scheduled to play the Arnold Palmer Cup at Tralee Golf Links in Ireland before heading to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, where the championship was held June 18-21, 2026.
