By the spring of 2026 he had posted two individual wins along with multiple top-10 finishes and ranked among the top players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, and he was named one of 10 finalists for the Fred Haskins Award given to college golf's top player.
Cowan reached the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills through final qualifying. At the BallenIsles Country Club East Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on June 8, he shot rounds of 71-67 for a 6-under total of 138, then survived a three-for-two playoff for the final qualifying spots, advancing with a par on the first extra hole while his competitors made bogeys. It marked his first appearance in the championship.
