Big John
The putt from Episode 2

With Team Finch and Team Ruffels tied 8–8, Big John holed the winner on the second sudden-death hole to put Ruffels’ side through to Day 2. He rolled it with a Reaper Golf The Scythe, a made-to-order blade he picked up as a gimmick and kept because the putts started dropping. The story of the putter · Big John’s bag · The Scythe putter

The draft and the Day 1 morning

The 2026 format is four teams of 16. The players voted between four pre-set groups of captains, and Brad Dalke, Wesley Bryan, Ryan Ruffels and Peter Finch won it, then built their sides in a snake draft. Dalke opened with Tooms, Wesley Bryan took his brother George, Finch took Luke Kwon and Ruffels took Micah Morris. The Duke went last, Mr. Irrelevant for Team White.

Ruffels won the closest-to-the-pin shootout on a makeshift 100-yard hole ($5,000 to every member of his team) and chose to play Finch, leaving Dalke against Wesley Bryan. Day 1 is at Ozarks National: eight two-player matches per side in a 9-hole scramble in the morning, then eight alternate-shot matches in the afternoon, one point each, no handicaps. A team needs 8.5 of 16 points, and the two teams with the most Day 1 points go through. Every member of the winning team takes $1.3 million, and the first ace on the day’s Reese’s par 3 is worth $500,000.

The trophy carries Cody “Beef” Franke’s name. His family opened the week by announcing the Cody Beef Franke Foundation and a Ferris State PGM scholarship set up by Fore Play. Luke Kwon slept in a tent by the first tee to make his 8am time. Blue went to lunch ahead of White, and Green ahead of Red. The afternoon alternate shot, and the Day 1 cut, come in Episode 2.

  2. Episode 2Thu, Oct 29Out now▶ Watch on YouTube

The alternate shot, an 8–8 tie and Big John’s putt

Episode 2 opens with the afternoon matchup draft and a new rule: the committee can veto any pairing it thinks is being thrown, which Portnoy christened the Gruden rule. It mattered straight away. Team Ruffels put up Bobby Ray and Jon Gruden, Team Finch answered with Frankie Borrelli and Francis Ellis, White then argued the match was unfair to its own pair, Frankie pointed out that Bobby Ray had been drafted two picks before him, and the pairing stood. Team Wesley Bryan, 6–2 up on Team Dalke after the morning, needed two and a half points from the eight alternate-shot matches.

The Finch v Ruffels half went to the wire. Ruffels and Riggs beat Rick Shiels and Martin Borgmeier 5&4, Grant Horvat and Justin Gaethje edged Roger Steele and Daniel Saloner when the Short Game King missed from four feet on the last, and Paige Spiranac and Jake Adams ran away from Joey Cold Cuts and The Jet. Luke Kwon and Malosi Togisala took down Big John and Fat Perez, Trent Ryan and Jersey Jerry nearly gave back a 3-up lead with three to play after an eight-beats-nine par 3 against The Duke and Salim Sirur before winning on the last, and the Gruden match was halved when Francis Ellis holed on 18. That left it 8–8 and sent the two teams to a sudden-death alternate-shot playoff.

Two players from each team per hole, nobody twice in a row. Finch and Kwon halved the first with Ruffels and Micah Morris, Kwon holing the par putt that kept Blue alive a year after he missed his tee time at this event. On the second, Roger Steele’s drive flew past Big John’s, which found a bunker, but Grant Horvat played out close, Steele’s putt slid by and Big John, who says he was almost not invited, holed the winner with his Reaper putter. Team Ruffels and Team Wesley Bryan go to Day 2; Team Finch and Team Dalke are out, and 32 players are left.

  3. Episode 3Mon, Nov 2Out now▶ Watch on YouTube

Day 2 at Buffalo Ridge: White lead 6–2 at lunch

Portnoy offered both surviving teams a redraft and both kept their rosters. Day 2 moves to Buffalo Ridge: eight 9-hole scrambles in the morning, with each team submitting its pairs and the committee deciding who plays whom, then 16 singles matches in the afternoon, so a team needs 12.5 of 24 points. Each side can call on Kevin Kisner for one shot per round, declared in advance and never on the 9th, and the par-3 9th is worth $50,000 to the winning pair in every group, carried over to the next group when it is halved.

Team Ruffels won five of the eight scrambles and halved two. Salim Sirur and Jon Gruden beat PFT Commenter and Callux 2&1 after both teams used their Kisner shot on the same hole, Big John and Fat Perez beat George Bryan and Chaz Bowker, and Bobby Ray and The Duke beat Cheddy and Kyle Forgeard 3&2. Paige Spiranac holed the putt on the 9th that won her match with Jake Adams 1 up and a $200,000 carryover, shared $25,000 apiece across eight White players, and Tom Broders and Marissa Wenzler also took ninth-hole money.

Green’s only win came from the captain. Wesley Bryan and Bob Does Sports were 2 down after five holes to Ryan Ruffels and Riggs, won three straight holes and took the match 1 up. Team Ruffels lead 6–2 going into the afternoon singles, which come in Episode 4 on November 5, and need 6.5 of the 16 points available.
